52 Weeks of Organizing: Week 7 Email Management

This week, I was kind of at a loss for things to organized. Not that I don't have many, many, many things to tackle, but this week, everything just seemed huge and overwhelming.

Last night, I turned on my laptop to post a recipe. For some reason, I opened my email program and began cleaning up my messages.

Photobucket

All 700 of them sitting, abandoned, in my inbox since migrating to my new laptop in April (2010). I created new folders and began the task of deleting and moving and renaming and saving the attachments.

And as I cooked supper tonight, I thought "What on earth and I going to organize between now and bedtime!?" Forgetting completely the task I'd completed the night before!

So there was no fanfare, no big production, no dragging my husband by the wrist to see my latest accomplishment - it was just a task that had to be done and I did it.

And now I feel like I've got control of my inbox! At least for this week!

  1. Every accomplishment, however small, tends to make me keep at it. I hope it is the same for you.

  2. That is the truth - to be able to open my email without the "Oh good grief..." at the overwhelming stack of messages is a very good reminder of that fact!

  3. Sometimes the digital declutter is as good for us as a physical one. I feel happier on my laptop when I'm not overwhelmed. Which reminds me, I should declutter my desktop (on the laptop that is).

  4. Good to know I'm not the only one who grabs my husband the moment he walks in the door to show him what I have gotten organized today! :)

  6. Heather... When you get through with yours, want to do mine??? ;) That will be one big project for me too... I've got files upon files of patterns, ideas, partly written stories, thought, ramblings, business documents, school documents, drawings - the list is a mile long. I collect just as much electronic clutter as I do tangible clutter!

  7. Barb - hehehe - does yours look around first to see where you piled the stuff you organized? Mine figures I've just moved it around! I guess it's just because we're so proud of ourselves (and so we should be)!

  8. Martha - that's right it does. I think I just discounted it because most people deal with stuff in their inboxes right away and I can't be bothered to address all the stuff that piles up! But not anymore - step one to keeping organized is to deal with it right away!
